Three Peaks Trial
The South Wales 3 Peaks Trial
For those of you how don’t already know the South Wales 3 Peaks Challenge is run every year by the Cardiff Outdoor Group, and through their registration fee they raise money for Longtown Mountain Rescue Team and the Elenydd Wilderness Trust to help maintain the remote Ty'n Cornel and Dolgoch Youth Hostels. We are have arranged with them for us to use the event as a way of raising money for the Richard Hunt Foundation.
We will do this by getting as many people as possible to sign up for the event with them and raise sponsorship for the Foundation. We have created our own sponsorship form for you to use there are different forms for each of the different categories see below for further info, these forms can be download below:
SPONSOR FORMS
We will be making t-shirts for the event so if you are interested in buying a t-shirt then please register your interest with us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it the more people who request them the less they will cost us to produce, more details to follow at a later date.
We will be holding a competition to see which individual person can raise the most amount of money for the foundation, the winner will be announced on the website and will win a bottle of Jack Daniels and a bottle of Coke, a prize which Richard would very much have liked! Will be putting a hall of fame on the website after the event to show the top 50 fundraisers and all completers will receive a certificate congratulating and thanking them from the Richard Hunt Foundation.
At the end of the challenge we will also be taking photos of all completers and these with your permission will be put onto a gallery on our website. Photos will be available after the event for a small donation.
About the Event
Walk was first held in March 1963 and was designed for less experienced walkers who wanted to test their powers of endurance and skill at map reading. It is the third oldest event of its type in the UK. Over the years the event has been modified so in 2010 there is a choice of four routes:
Platinum Route: This is a linear walk of about 17 miles and 5000' of ascent from Llanthony to Abergavenny over Bal Mawr, Pen Cerrig Calch and Sugar Loaf. Entry to the Platinum Route is limited to 100. Although the Platinum Route is shorter than the Gold, the ascents are steeper and navigation more challenging, hence the higher grading.
Gold Route: This is the original challenge, a circular walk of about 20 miles and 5000' of ascent, which crosses over three prominent peaks around Abergavenny in Monmouthshire: Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. This route is never far from civilisation yet there is no obvious route so that concentration on map reading is essential to keep to the best route.
Silver Route: This is a circular walk of about 15 miles and 4000' of ascent. It follows the Gold Route from Abergavenny over Blorenge and Sugar Loaf, and then descends back to Abergavenny.
Bronze Route: This is a circular walk of about 10 miles and 2000' of ascent. The route goes from Abergavenny to the summit of Sugar Loaf, descending by a different path.
